  • Meteoro do Caos

    Meteoro do Caos

Invoker: the hero whose mechanics are not what is missing

By Filipe "Astini", three-time tier-1 champion coach·Reviewed on August 30, 2026

Everyone who crashes on Invoker thinks they crash on the mechanics. In the replay analyses we do, that's almost never it. The player hits the combo. What he gets wrong is which Invoker he's playing and where he was allowed to be when he spent the combo.

The Invoker is not a hero: there are three

The choice of talent and skill order divides the hero into three different games, and playing the hybrid is the shortest way to be irrelevant in both.

SchoolHow to winItem DefiningWhen to choose
Quas/WexMap presence, ganks, Tornado + EMPHand of Midas early, then AghanimTeam with initiation and you are the second damage
ExortPure Damage, Sun Strike, wave farmingHand of Midas, Aghanim, RefresherReliable spell-damage-free team, long game
Quas/ExortSurvival and Forge Spirits, hard laneEarly BlinkBad lane, you need to exist until the 20th

The mid bracket mistake is to choose what gives the most "highlight" (Sun Strike of a full map) and not what the draft asks.

Invoker's scarce resource is not mana

It's summoning time. Each orb swap costs seconds that you don't have in the middle of the fight. This has a practical consequence that almost no one applies: you need to enter the fray with the right two spells already summoned, and choosing which two is the hero's most important decision.

The rule that works: invoke for the problem you have, not for the combo you want.

  • Does enemy team have strong initiation? Tornado and Ghost Walk ready, always.
  • Are you the one who starts? Cold Snap and Alacrity ready, and the Tornado is on the way out.
  • Defending high ground? Ice Wall and Chaos Meteor ready, and nothing else matters.

Full combo is for when you started. In the other 80% of fights, you will press two spells at most.

Where the Invoker is allowed to be

The Invoker is fragile, slow without Blink, and die-hardy: he carries the farm from a 2-position with the durability of a support. This defines his map:

  1. Before minute 12: mid and rune. Leaving the mid with no TP available is the most common hero kill.
  2. Between 12 and 25: the Invoker is the hero who converts vision into a kill. He should always be one step behind the line of sight that the team controls, never in front of it.
  3. After 25: he is the second wave of damage. The Invoker that enters the late game fray first is wrong, even if the combo hits all five.

The error that appears in every replay

Spending Sun Strike on a target that will die anyway. Sun Strike is the only magic in the game that kills on the other side of the map, and most Invokers use it as a last shot in a fight the team has already won. Its actual value is:

  • kill the support that ran away with 10% health and was going to return in two minutes;
  • denying the Aegis (it works, and almost no one tries);
  • clear wave that is hitting the tower while you are on the other side.

The math you do before every spell

*If I die in the next five seconds, can my team win this fight?*

The Invoker is the hero where this answer is "no" most often. Play accordingly: stay alive, show up later, and accept that the perfect combo is rarely the right move.

Did this build work for you?

The numbers come from the top of the ladder. What they do not say is whether the build holds up in the games played here. Your answer is what adjusts that.
