Desigualdade Esmagadora

Legion Commander has a number on screen that no other hero has: accumulated Duel damage. And that number ruins the hero. The player starts playing to raise the number, and the number does not win games: it measures how many bets paid off, without showing how many were placed or what they cost. Duel is not an ability. It is a decision that involves ten heroes, and that is how it has to be read.
When Legion presses Duel, two things are locked for up to five and a half seconds: her and the target. The rest of the map keeps moving. If her team arrives first, the target dies. If the enemy team arrives first, Legion dies with Blink on cooldown and Blade Mail spent. The Duel by itself decides nothing: it decides who arrives.
So the question before each Duel is not do I beat this hero. It is: how many allies are within 600 units of me, how many enemies are within 600 of the target, and who still has control they have not spent. A Legion who answers that question duels four times a game and wins all four. One who does not duels ten times and wins six, and the four she lost are the fights that decided the game.
Legion Commander is played as a jungle hero from minute 1, and it is the hero's most expensive mistake at mid rank. Legion has one of the best laning phases among offlaners: Overwhelming Odds hits the wave and the hero at the same time, Press the Attack removes the damage from the trade and heals, and Moment of Courage returns damage to whoever hits her. She wins the lane against most carries, if she stays in it.
What happens in the jungle from minute 3 to 10 is the opposite: she farms slowly, the enemy carry farms freely, and Legion arrives at minute 12 with Blink and no levels, against a carry who already has his survival item. Legion's jungle exists for one case only: when the lane is already lost and staying in it means dying.
| Use | What it yields |
|---|---|
| On the enemy wave, with two heroes inside | area damage and the wave dies faster: farm and trade at the same time |
| On the pull camp the enemy support is doing | interrupts the pull and punishes the support |
| On illusions and summons (Phantom Lancer, Naga, Nature's Prophet) | damage that scales with the number of targets: it is the counter the hero hides |
Odds on a lone hero, in the middle of nowhere, is the wasted ability that shows up the most in student Legion replays. It wants targets, not a target.
Below Legend, Press the Attack is used on Legion herself when she is low. Above, it is used on the allied carry who just got stunned, because the dispel removes the control and the heal buys the two seconds he needs to hit. It is the difference between a Legion who saves herself and one who saves the fight.
The reading with Duel is the same: Press the Attack before the Duel, not during. Activated before, the heal and the extra damage are running when the Duel starts. Activated in the middle, the enemy has already hit half the HP and the heal is playing catch-up.
Blink Dagger first, almost always. Legion without Blink chooses a target among those in front; with Blink, she chooses the support in the back, which is the target that dies and that removes the enemy team's control. Blade Mail after, because Blade Mail is the answer to the carry who knows he is about to be dueled, and that carry only shows up once the Blink has scared him.
The Legion who buys Armlet, Blade Mail and then Blink, at minute 22, is dueling the wrong targets for the whole game.
Active BKB, Ghost Scepter, Eul's in hand, Omniknight or Oracle alive on the enemy team: under those conditions the Duel is a trap for Legion herself. The enemy carry who buys Ghost Scepter at minute 15 is announcing he has played against Legion before. Reading that in his inventory is what avoids the three deaths that hand over the game.
*If I press Duel now and my team does not come, what happens to me?*
If the answer is I die, do not press it. Duel is only a good ability when that answer is I kill anyway, and that happens fewer times per game than the damage counter makes it seem.

Advantage in points over Legion Commander's usual win rate: negative means trouble. World data comes first (STRATZ and OpenDota); our high-MMR matches take over once the sample is big enough.
